The modern Chinese character formation theory, advanced by Professor Su Peicheng in the 1990s, provides a new pattern to describe modern Chinese character formation types and a formula to calculate the structure rationale of modern Chinese characters. As a new approach in the study field of modern Chinese character formation theory, it has a highly practical value, particularly in Chinese character teaching for the foreign students.Based on the character formation theory created by Professor Su Peicheng, this essay draws up strict and systematic operating rules for character separation and classification. After a character by character analysis, the 6500 characters of the first and second rank in National and Standard Chinese Character are divided into 7 types of character formation and 17 patterns of character structure. With the formula raised by Professor Su Peicheng, this essay calculates the structure rationale of the characters category by category. It is hoped that this essay can provide some valuable statistics and materials for further study.Due to the distinguishing feature of Chinese characters, Chinese character teaching has some specific characteristics. Chinese character teaching must base on analysis of the character formation and structure and associate with pronunciation and meaning. According to this essay, the structure rationale of Chinese characters is around 67%. It is concluded that Chinese teaching should pay great attention to the structure rationale of Chinese characters and make full use of it to help the foreign students improve the efficiency of their Chinese learning. In view of different types of Chinese characters, this essay puts forward some specific suggestions. Firstly, single-structured characters should be taught before the multiple-structured characters, and as a difficult point, the multiple-structured characters should be attach ed more importance to; secondly, in order to enhance the students'cognition about the function of the pronouncing and meaning signs, the method of association should be made full use of when the foreign students are learning the pictophonetic characters; thirdly, specific textbook and course should be used in Chinese teaching. All in all, teachers should take the structure rationale of Chinese characters into consideration and make their teaching forms flexible and diversified.
