Four-character is a word or phrase composed of four syllables, including simple words, compound words, idioms, fixed phrases, and so on.The four-character grid does not originally consist of four syllables, but instead evolves from two syllables and three syllables to four syllables. In the period of the late Qing Dynasty and the early period of the Republic of China, the rise of the New Culture Movement, new culture to replace old culture, vernacular Chinese to replace classical Chinese, and rapid social development and reform, promoted the development of vocabulary, and produced many new words, including a large number of four-character grids. This article takes the phenomenon of the formation of four-character grids in the vernacular in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China as the research object, and analyzes its types, characteristics, causes of formation and development.First of all, according to the different forms of formation,we can divide the four characters of the early Qing dynasty into four types:Adduct type four words,Additional type four words,Add a type four words, and Split type four words.Adduct type four words lattice is used by two independent dual tone of the words of AB and CD four words,AB and CD both can be used independently, can also be combined into a lattice ABCD four word. The basic features of the two parts are the same, similar or relevant, and the semantics of the two parts are not simply added, but are organically fused together.Additional four words lattice is used by an independent dual AB on an additional element of CD,thus forming the ABCD four word lattice or the CDAB four word lattice, four word ABCD or CDAB roughly equal to the meaning of AB,CD in the ideographic function here is not too big,the general said, range,or have the effect of speech foil.Depending on the location of the additional components, the additionalfour-character type is mainly divided into two types: the former and the latter four. The meaning of the main components and the appendages expressed in the most four words is the same, and only a very small number of the four characters are related to the meaning of the expression of the additive.Add a type four words is a four-letter word formed by the use of the phrase ABC,which can be used independently. The meaning of the phrase "ABC" is fixed and often used, and the addition of component D forms a new four-character lattice. The split type four words is a four-character block which cannot be used independently. The split type four words is formed at the end of the Qing dynasty, and can only be used together with four words, which cannot be used separately.According to the relationship between the two halves of the split-type four-character,it can be divided into two types: four-character and non-nested four-character.Its characteristics are structural dependency, semantic derivation and pragmatic emphasis.Secondly, the characteristics of the formation of the four-character grid in the late Qing and early Republic of China. The formation of four-character Chinese characters during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China did not occur overnight, but were gradual and varied. Therefore, they were transitional. The development of the times and the progress of society have led to the rapid development of the four-character Chinese character in this period and the formation of a large number of four-character grids. Therefore, its formation has shown strong characteristics of the times. The Chinese four-character form formed during the period of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China also reflected strong prolificacy characteristics, especially the use of derived forms.Third, the cause of formation of the four-character grid in the late Qing and early Republic of China.First, the influence of the socialenvironment. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early period of the Republic of China,a large number of new ideas and new cultures poured into the West. The development of the vernacular Chinese language has made great breakthroughs and promoted the formation of the four-character grid.Second, the influence of historical evolution.Four-character grid is a Chinese format that people use,and has a wide range of application and social basis.Third, language internal factors.Such as structural and grammatical factors, strong ability to derive the four-character grid, speech factors, etc.Fourth, the development of the four-character grid in the late Qing and early Republic of China.Today, there are a large number of four-character grids in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China that have been preserved and are active in contemporary languages. Some of the four-character grid formed in the late Qing and early Republican periods can still be used as a whole, and some can still be used only as a whole. The development of the four-character grid presents a general trend of increasing prosperity.
