In China, no other city could compete with Shanghai to represent the outstanding achievement China has accomplished as regard the country's urbanization process. The urban developing landscape of Shanghai, under the violent cultural collision between China and the West as well as between the traditional and the modern, has performed itself alien to the polis system that was popular in the previous city development of the foreign countries and as a result become the characteristic mixture of the Chinese and the Western modern societies. Given this background, a popular literary genre which is called MandarinDucks and Butterflies group came into being at the turn of the twentieth century whose public readers were nobody else but the common people.Modern Shanghai's urbanization development, the increase in the number of citizens, the formation of citizenship and burgher society together with the city's economic prosperity were all the beneficial factors to the creation of popular literary output. It was at that time that the romantic novels of the MandarinDucks and Butterflies group reached a general audience. My article is attempting to focus on the analysis of the social background, the mood of the writers, cultural view and the characteristic of the text with the purpose of proving that the romantic novels of the MandarinDucks and Butterflies group and modern Shanghai's urban development exerted mutual influence upon each other.
