The Verb-direction of Cantonese is frequently used and can express different meaningin different forms. However, the researches on it are so limited that most of them existin the Cantonese introduction textbook with only reference to the directional Verb ordirectional complement. Through the valency grammar, this thesis tries to, analyze thevalency of the Verb-direction in Cantonese and disclose the advance rules of theargument controlled by Verb-direction, aiming at gaining the coordination of theVerb-direction and the different word order it choose. We hope to enrich the researchof word order in Cantonese and unveil the abundant language phenomenon as well asthe language rules.This thesis consists of five chapters, in which the first chapter is introduction; thesecond chapter is classification of Verb-direction in Cantonese; the third chapter is thevalency and coordination of the Verb-direction in Cantonese; the forth chapter is wordorder choices of the Verb-direction in Cantonese; the fifth chapter is the conclusion.Chapter one: IntroductionThis chapter introduce the mainly research situation and deficiency of Verb-directionin Cantonese while illustrating the value of the thesis, the theory it use and therelevant reasons, the problem it intend to solve and the source of the Cantonesematerials.Chapter two: The classification of Verb-direction in CantoneseThis chapter classifies the main Verb and directional Verb including indicating theirsemantic character. Based on the classification, it divided the Verb-directional intothree categories: simplicity form and compound form.Chapter three: The valency and coordination of Verb-direction in CantoneseThis chapter gives the deep research on the valency of the main verb and directionalverb with the valency grammar. Through the examples analysis and diagram, it endsup with the formula: N=M+Q-W. At the meantime, it explore four advanced rules thearguments controlled by Verb-direction, which coincidently comply with the two rulesof Cognitive linguistic: (1) rule of sequencing iconicity (2) rule of prominence.Finally, it presents the actual coordination procedure of Verb-direction in Cantonese.Chapter four: word order categories of the Verb-direction in CantoneseOn the basis of advanced rules and coordination procedure, this chapter lists thedifferent word order which could be used by Verb-direction in Cantonese. Besides, itprobe into the relationship between the valency and word order.Chapter Five: ConclusionThis chapter gives a summery to the research result of applying the valency grammarto the Verb-direction in Cantonese including the valency, coordination and word orderof Verb-direction.
