Based on the functional grammar theory, and in the light of approaches suchas grammaticalization ,cogntive grammar and valency grammar, the currenresearch makes a thorough probe into the directional verbs "进,进来,进去,出,出来,出去", in contempotaty Chinese from the angles of diachronicevolvement. Through the discussion of the directional complement, thisdissertation discloses some laws of production and evolvement of directionalcomplement. It also explores the grammaticalization principle of directionalcomplement.Chapter one analyzes grammatical meaning of the directional verbs and theclass of verbs. Grammatical meaning of the directional verbs is divided intodirectional meaning and result meaning, which can be scientificallydistinguished by formal standard.Chapter two explores selecting rules of four kinds of directional structure .The selecting rules can logically explain the positions of verbs,objects anddirectional verbs.Chapter three and four review the process of grammaticalization ofdirectional verbs and four kinds of directional structure. This two chapterspreferably draw detailed skeletons of the directional verbs and four kinds ofdirectional structure.Chapter five explores the grammaticalization principle of the directionalverbs and four kinds of directional structure, by using theories of "exc;usivecore verb","semantic base"and valency grammar.
