China, a great country which boasts a historically splendid achievement in mural, has gone through a history of thousands of years since cliff painting which is an original form of mural made its appearance. Having undergone rise and decline in the thousands of years, however, the basic function and manifestation of mural had no obvious change before 20th century. But the 20th century, one single hundred years, witnessed the notable renaissance of Chinese mural fighting out of its withering situation in the beginning of the century. The mural has changed profoundly in many aspects such as the creating form, the arts and crafts, demonstrative function and the connotation of its definition and its artistic accomplishment also surpassed that of all previous periods. Meanwhile, in this century, China underwent a substantial social transformation in social setting, politics and culture, economical construction and science and technology due to the several different historical periods she had experienced from feudal society to capitalist society and to socialist society. Hence, is there an inseparable connection between such a profound change Chinese mural presented in such a short time and the social transformation of China in this century? What is the intrinsic connection on earth between the social transformation and the mural's existence and form as well as its change of function? Can we trace the connection by studying these changes and transformations? The object of research in this paper is "the social factors contributing to the evolvement of Chinese mural in 20th century". The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of the change in social factors on the creation of mural by studying the evolvement of Chinese mural's form and function as well as its corresponding social transformation in politics, economy, cultural and educational system and science and technology, etc. Then a comparison is to be made between the social transformation and the appearance of the mural to probe into some noticeable problems emerging in teaching and creation of Chinese mural in this new era.
