The class of scholar-bureaucrat is generally called the class of "SHI", which is one special intelligentsia class between the monarch and the plebeian in China's ancient society, their thoughts, value and their own cultural morality were transmitted the field of painting, which enlightened the scholars to paint and thus the existence of scholar painting. In the first chapter, beginning with the thought " developing art by traveling and depending on humanity" in Confucian, the author explains the directive function of the value "developing art by traveling" in Confucian in scholar's involvement of painting and how they regulated and changed the direction of Chinese traditional painting in their solving the contradictions between the morality and the art. In second chapter, the author explores the real condition of scholar's involvement in painting before Song Dynasty and analyzes their cultural intension which was influenced by different historic backgrounds, religions and philosophical thoughts. The cultural intension was transmitted to the painting art, and it enriched and changed the connotation and styles of the painting art. The author concludes that the existence of scholar painting is historically necessity. In the third chapter, the author analyzes the self-knowledge period of scholar painting and explores the reason why it existed and its theoretical connotation. In the fourth chapter, the author summarizes the scholar's influence to painting after they became the principle part of painting, the scholars drove up the metaphysical value and depreciate the skill value of painting and became one series of special connotation and styles of scholar painting. Due to its big scope, the author just introduces briefly the new painting value and the new painting aesthetic characters after the scholar's involvement in painting in this chapter. Beginning with the subject of scholar painting—the scholars, the author explains that the springing-up of scholar painting is the result of the special class—the scholars chose initiatively, the total connotation is endowed by this subject. With the spallation of the subject—the scholars, the scholar painting is actually a dynamic process.
