Before the China's war against Japan, Shanghai was then the national cultural center which enjoyed overwhelming importance across the whole country. It was after the Lukouchiao Incident when peiping and Tientsin were lost to Japanese army. As a result, more than 90% of China's then cultural celebrities chose to live in Shanghai. The comparatively good cultural environment in Shanghai provided them with better opportunities for their living as well as creative activity, which then in turn was significant to Shanghai culture, helping to build the cultural atmosphere in Shanghai and playing an important role in the fostering of the spirit of Shanghai.China was then experiencing a special period -the whole nation was engaged in the war against Japan, and the cultural activities in Shanghai were powerful and dynamic. It is reasonable to say that the action of intellectuals in Shanghai during the Anti-Japanese war initial stages was a prototype of all the cultural activities throughout China. On November 12th,1937, with the Chinese troops' withdrawal, Shanghai was lost immediately, which changed the situation of Shanghai, with the cultural organizations moving to central China in succession. Facing the crucial war and the enemy's unruly conduct, the culture intellectuals in Shanghai lived with different moods, calm or fickle, angry or depressed, struggling in a way to live for the present and seeking the fate of future. To live on without turning into colonial slaves, to continue the Chinese culture, some cultural intellectuals chose the road of a hard and unsurpassed migration: leaving for Yan'an; some of them transferred to the Kuomintang ruled district; some went to Hong Kong or overseas. Still there were some chose to stay in the subjugated area, living within Shanghai rent inside boundary, which was called isolated island.Shanghai cultural intellectuals' retreat is positive on the aggregate, for it has maintained sufficient cultural strength; in the meantime, as so many cultural intellectuals flooding inland, they made great contribution to the development of culture cause there.
