The Eastern Miscellany, which was issued in March, 1904 and terminated in December, 1948, was a comprehensive, large-scale and profitable one and had the longest life of the periodicals published in the modern times of China. This paper takes the periodicals published from 1904 to 1911 as the research objective and discusses it by using an inductive method. Because the Miscellany was published during the lately Qing Dynasty, so the cross-cultural background finds its way into the research. According to the characters of the objective, the comparative method, the mass media theories, the sociology and culture theories, etc. are easy to play a role in the discussion. The paper will dissert the problem from 5 aspects listing below:i) Based on the qualitative analyses of the articles published in the miscellany, the paper uncovers the characters of the Eastern Miscellany.ii) The Miscellany was characteristic of its reprinting articles, so the paper tries to analyze the original news paper and magazines to contemplate the quality of the Miscellany.iii) Through the analyses of the chief editors, Xuke, Mengsen, Du Yaquan, the president, Zhang Yuanji, of the Commercial Press, which was the publisher of the Eastern Miscellany, the paper depicts the true color of the Miscellany.iv) Having examined it in a mass media angle, the paper makes a better understanding about the reality of the Eastern Miscellany.v) The analyses of the literary parts of the Miscellany are meaningful and helpful for people to grasp the real spirit of the Miscellany in the lately Qing Dynasty.Having completed the dissertation of the 5 aspects stated here, the paper tries to draw some conclusions which give us more clear and reasonable evaluations about the Eastern Miscellany under the cross-cultural communication environments.
