The purpose of this essay is to understand and research further Shi Tao's aesthetic idea and creative techniques through the analysis of the Waterfall at Mount Lu. The author has adopted the method of combining documents with drawings to research the Record of Kugua Monk Drawing Language to get a profound understanding about Shi Tao's aesthetic idea, in detail his Yi Hua theory.The author has analyzed the Waterfall at Mount Lu from the perspectives of text structure, composition, techniques, meanwhile made a brave assumption and explanation on the composition arrangement of the drawing, the painter's intention as well. The author states that it is necessary to value an artist from the point of history; therefore the author has compared Dong Qichang with contemporary artists- Ba Da Shan-ren to achieve a better appreciation of the artists' status and influence in history. Furthermore, besides the discussion about Shi Tao's aesthetic idea and techniques, the author has pointed out the limitations in the study of Shi Tao. The author holds the study is limited to several subjects and lacks of study from the perspective of his calligraphy. The author gives a judgment of other ink paintings in modern times following Shi Tao's idea that drawing should advance with times.
