With the deepening of the "education for all-round development", public music education in colleges is embracing new opportunities. Adding elective courses like vocal arts into college curriculum is one of the key approaches to contributing to Arts, public music and aesthetic education in colleges. Vocal music elective course is essential to art education, for its popularity among students, interaction in classes, and its possibility in being extended to common people. Therefore, vocal music elective course is one of the most effective, straightforward, and the easiest way to carry out music education in colleges. Vocal music elective course provides students with not only vocal skills but also the ability to appreciate music master pieces in an interactive way; it also helps to accomplish the educational goal of aesthetic and creativity cultivation among college students.This essay, using the methods of questionnaire, interviews, and researching in obtaining firsthand materials about the status quo of vocal music elective course in colleges, summed up experiences and achievements; analyzes problems and deficiencies. In addition, I gave my own thoughts in this essay about the issues of the educational goals, contents formats, approaches, ways of evaluation, and qualifications of teachers. I gave opinions specifically about how to integrate vocal skills into the ability of music appreciation.
