After slogging in the corporate world for 10 years, Wang Wenhua, formerly a Stanford-MBA trained executive, is now the writer of many popular romance fiction books. He draws inspiration from the nitty-gritty of daily life, such as a uniquely designed button on the uniform of a waiter and a bottle of high-grade cheese in a convenience store. He records such details into his computer notebook, for the eventuality that they could be one day be used in his writing. Such details, when used appropriately in romance fiction, can sway the reader's feelings. "I come across alluring details like these every day, and one day, when the time is right, I assign them to the characters in my stories," he says. The reality is that people nowadays do not go for fairytale, flawless storyline, nor do they appreciate impressive yet low-in-substance visual impact, nor do they readily approve of rigid preaching of ideas. Instead, people are moved by sincere, commonplace and delicate ideas and experiences. As graphic designers, our inspiration for creativity should also come from our understanding and appreciation for ordinary life, and our design should be borne out of such understanding and appreciation. Only then will the design manifest a profound thinking process and a grasp of details.
