"composite Verb + Object Word Order Historical Evolution

The word order of "V+ Compound Directional Complementation + Object" (V+CDC+O) is one of the very important grammar phenomena in Chinese. As to the types of word order of "V+CDC+O", the tenable conditions and the reasons of these types, the predecessors had made deeply research. However, there has been little research as to the motivation and mechanism of the word orders' changes. In this article, we made an exhaustive description and statistics towards the examples of "V+CDC+O" from Tang Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, thus combed the development clue of the four kinds of word orders. Based on the description and statistics, we made some explanations to the causes of the development by the use of the modern linguistic theories.There are four parts in this article, namely "the Introduction", "the Description of 'V+CDC+O' in History", "the Causes of the Development of 'V+CDC+O'" and "the Conclusion".In the first part, we made a brief introduction of the contemporary research of this question, the aim of this article, the theoretical base as well as the methods which we used in this article.The main body of this article is the second part, in which we made an exhaustive description of the examples of "V+CDC+O" from Tang Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. Through the inspection, we found that the object-first pattern and the object-middle pattern had emerged in Tang Dynasty, though the quantities were extremely few; Song Dynasty was an important period in the development process of "V+CDC+O", in this period, not only the quantities of object-first pattern and object-middle pattern increased sharply, but the object-last pattern and the "Ba(把)" pattern emerged; In Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, the usage of each kind of word order increasingly consummated, the compound directional complement had developed the conditional meaning.In the third part, based on the second part, we explained the causes of the development of "V+CDC+O". We believed that the analogy of "V+ Simple Directional Complementation + Object", the semantic bleaching of compound directional complements, the rhythm restriction and so on are the causes which led to the developments of "V+CDC+O"; At the same time, we also explained the coexisting phenomenon of the four kinds of word order in modern Chinese, using "the function differentiation" principle.In the forth par, we carried on a summary to the article, pointed out the insufficiency of this paper and proposed the new research direction.
