After forming independent language (self-language) in the 18th century, water color painting became an independent class, parting company with canvas, each going its own way. It introduced itself into China in the last century, and got wide-spread because it is quite the same as Chinese traditional painting in tasting. Now that water color painting is a kind of spread-in painting, it took a due course for it to transform from foreign culture to local. In the past 20 years, it has made rapid progress. There have been all kinds of varieties not only in subject and manifesting technique, but also in form.The paper firstly introduces the definition of water color painting, and analyzes its self-language from medium, technique and its cultural background. In the second part, the author reviewed the developing course of water color painting, from the founding of 'Tushanwan painting shop' to its present development, with the emphasis on the prosperous situation of water color painting in contemporary China. And this situation is just the result of referring and fusing, where the key point of this paper focuses. First, the referring and fusing with traditional Chinese painting, canvas and propylene brings multi-language for water color painting. Second, the introduction of synthesizing material and technique into it also promotes its development. However, a coin always has two sides. Besides the positive aspects, it also has some shortcomings, which produce the divergence of point of view on the multi-language of water color painting. Therefore, in the last chapter the author analyzes its self-language and multi-language, and gets the conclusion that they are actually consistent. In short, in order to make full development, and have a foothold in the world, Chinese water color painting should not only enhance the connotation of its language, but expand its denotative content.
