Since 1990s, novels have been challenged by the prosperity of film and TV industry and novels have changed under the influence of the styles of film and TV works and commercial rules of the industry. This thesis is based on these changes, centering on their causes and outcomes. The author first analyzed the changes in the novelists' environment in 1990s, their influence on the novelists' writing styles, and the marks left in novels by the film and TV discourses, which is the highlight of this thesis. This thesis is composed of three chapters. Chapter 1 explores the reasons why film and TV works could influence novels in 1990s. Three reasons are identified: firstly, the novelists' writing styles were affected by the new expectations for novels of the film and TV industry and the readers in the new background of the market economy; secondly, the novelists themselves altered their writing styles to cater to the film and TV industry and market to earn fame and money; thirdly, the commonness of film and TV works and novels provide a basis for their mutual influence. Chapter 2 displays the picture of novels conceding under the pressure of film and TV works, taking film and TV novels as a prototype case for analysis. This chapter holds that the conceding is a positive approach for novels to retain its literary nature. Chapter 3 analyzes the texts of the novels written with elements of film and TV styles, focusing on the works of those novelists closely related to the film and TV industry. This thesis carefully analyzes the phenomenon of mutual adaptation of novels and film and TV works, with the focus on novels, either those adapted into or those adapted from film and TV works. The intention is to display the changes of novels in the new environment to explore the potential influence of these changes on novels.
