| It's known that there was a burning-manuscript event in history by the famous poet Du Mu of the late Tang Dynasty, which was recorded in both New History of Tang·Biography of Du Mu and Preface to Collected Works of Fan Chuan by Pei Yanhan, Du Mu's nephew. On the basis of studying the order of arrangement of Collected Works of Fan Chuan, this paper mainly explores the left articles of Du Mu according to two clues.Collected Works of Fan Chuan is arranged by writing style in volume. Every kind of writing style is divided into a few sections by genre or contents. The articles in every section are arranged by two methods: if the objects of the articles concern respectful or humble status, close or alienate relations, the articles are arranged from high official position to low official position; if the objects of the articles don't concern the differences of status, the articles are categorized by whereabouts or arranged by time sequence.Although there is a certain order in every kind of writing style of Collected Works, there are still quite a number of beginning articles of each writing style which are not easy to be categorized into its inner order respectively. It is just these articles that were famous at that time, or were dedicated to Shen Chuanshi by Du Mu, or were praised highly in the preface to Collected Works by Pei Yanhan. The other few beginning articles of the same inner order in each volume with the same style are of very importance either by length of writing or objects. The articles of the above two categories enjoy an excellent reputation. They are placed at the beginning of each volume and are different from the other articles with the same writing style, which seem to be arranged by the compiler on purpose. They are possibly the left articles after burning and have a total number of sixty-three through organization. The supposed left articles are most essays written in prose to reason things and comment, which are different from the"current articles"in pursuit of antithesis in rhyme and tone of words of the late Tang Dynasty. This literary taste of Du Mu is related to Classical Prose Movement. Most of his articles show the thought of"honour the king, expel the barbarians"and"honour Confucianism, repel Buddhism"in line with Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan. His argument that"Confucian classics tell fundamental laws","Historical records show the rise and fall of a nation"is similar to that of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan. In terms of literary thought, Du Mu is indeed the important supporter of Classical Prose after Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan.Collected Works of Fan Chuan is a complete example that a person of Tang Dynasty compiled the collected works of Tang Dynasty. Contemporary Collected Works is more or less the same to that by Pei Yanhan. Pei Yanhan divides Collected Works into 20 volumes mainly according to writing style. A few collected works of individual authors of Tang Dynasty by Tang compilers on hand are compiled generally in the same way. It is an interesting example in Tang collection that the left articles after burning are placed at the beginning of each writing style. In the course of exploring the order of arrangement of Collected Works of Fan Chuan, it is necessary to know in detail the time and place of prose writing. Most of the articles in Collected Works have the exact writing time through the textual research and discussion by previous scholars. Only a few articles are given the supplement through the author's study. A table about the writing time is attached to the paper according to the order of the articles in Collected Works of Fan Chuan. |
