In recent years, more and more people are learning Japanese brush painting. In ancient times, brush painting was only performed in the world of scholars. Today, if you have the attitude to please yourself, then you are able to paint some. This is to say the aloof and exclusive art is getting closer to us, which we should accept pleasantly. However, the fact is that Japanese brush painting does not express the unique Japanese taste. It is neither totally western nor totally Chinese. Thus, I think there are some crucial factors for the shortcoming. In my ten years study in China, I have studied landscape paintings of the Song Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty in a systematic way. I have realized that in the development process of Japanese brush painting, the Zhejiang-school landscape paintings of the Southern Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty imposed much higher influence on Japanese brush painting than that of the Yuan Dynasty. However, the landscape paintings of the Yuan Dynasty imposed profound and lasting influence in the history of Chinese landscape paintings. Though Japan was less developed than China at that time, the artistic mood of the landscape paintings of the Yuan Dynasty was not unacceptable to Japanese people. In other words, only the landscape paintings of the Yuan Dynasty contain the things that Japanese people should learn and pursue. Therefore, in terms of the development history of Japanese brush painting, it is necessary to study the paintings of the Yuan Dynasty for understanding the soul of the landscape paintings of the Yuan Dynasty and for the future of Japanese brush paintings.
