Lv Chang Shuhong Oil Paintings In The Northwest And Its Pioneering Research

There hardly was any oil painting creation and fine art education in northwest area before LV Sibai &CHANG Shuhong's arrival. Because of their art activities, LV & CHANG became the great pioneer and contributor of oil painting creation and fine art education in northwest area. Meanwhile, they were the earliest and most influential artists using oil painting to manifest the local customs and regional features of the Loess Plateau. Their oil painting's aesthetic characteristics have exerted great influence upon the later northwest area's oil painting. The art education conducted by them held exploiting role in northwest area's art education history.In the former part, this thesis reviews the enormous influence aroused by LV & CHANG's oil paintings when they studying in France and after they returning from the abroad. The oil paintings created after they arrived in northwest area conveyed distinct regional and national character—the northwest character, and these paintings were the earliest ones winning the nationwide reputation for northwest area. These two masters show different style and aesthetic characteristics. The "Dust Color Series", created by LV Sibai, initiated the works that present northwest area's regional features and Plateau's aesthetic characteristics. The northwest area's features of his painting, along with the simple, plain, thick and profound style, exerted far-reaching influence on the later northwest area's oil painting. Learning from Dunhuang art, CHANG Shuhong's oil painting show strong oriental taste and decorative style, pursuing the oil painting's nationalization. His viewpoint and practice of art, as well as his artistic presenting techniques, such as the oriental taste, impressionistic manner, decoration with line-surface method, played the role of model and inspiration for representing northwest area's nationality in oil painting.LV & CHANG's oil paintings about northwest area show deeply-moving charm because of their full manifestation of the unique regional and national character. They started the oil painting, in a real sense, on the theme of northwest area. Their great influence made the later local painters in northwest area and the painters from other areas who want to depict northwest come to northwest frontier proper to seek inspiration, to understand local spirits, so the local flavor and Plateau's spirit have chance to be fused into their oil painting. Hence, a creative trend of oil painting to present northwest area's regional, national and cultural characteristic was gradually developed.The latter part of the thesis reviews the exploiting contribution made by LV & CHANG for the art education in northwest area. LV Sibai founded the Art Department in Northwest Normal University, which was the first one with high starting pint, high level, integrated teaching ideas and teaching system in northwest area. CHANG Shuhong acted as president and professor in Lanzhou Art College, which was based upon the former. They cultivated a garden to foster art talents for northwest area. A great deal of educator and creator of art fostered by them became the backbone force to conduct art education, art creation and art theory studying in the provinces of northwest area. They are the founder, exploiter, and promoter of northwest area's art education.
