It is acknowledged in western countries that three main streams in TV programs are news, entertainment program and documentary. Whereas documentary TV program in China is developing in a slow pace. Compare to comprehensive news, various TV series and all kinds of entertainment program, documentary is too plain to attract massive audience. Which is the main point to improve documentary in terms of gaining audience? Will the investment on documentary, either from community or individual TV program investor, keep on instantly? These questions are direct influence to future of documentary TV program. Whether documentary TV program is able to remain the high achievement it used to?While the debate on whether documentary TV program is commercial product, or whether it brings financial benefits in China; the documentary TV programs in western countries have been moving on marketization and getting more and more stable. There is particular documentary channel in some European countries, or set a fixed time, mostly golden TV program time, playing documentary program. It is possibly to be eliminated eventually if the financial factor is ignored in developing documentary TV program. As saying in Chinese phrase: looking into the history, you foresee the destiny of your nation. This thesis report starts with illustrating three phases documentary TV program in China has experienced. With high audience acceptance, such as "Wang ChangCheng" - long documentary TV program; "ShengHuo Kong Jian" - a program presents ordinary life among people. It emphasizes on current program, a critical turning towards marketization - "Dong Fang Quan Ji Lu"; and documentary channel - Shanghai Documentary channel.On one hand, it is a desperate situation; one the other hand, it is huge developing potential, documentary TV program confronts a critical point on the new era of Chinese TV program. Repeat the old developing concept, it will only keep away TV audience. To get deep understanding on worldwide trend, to adopt advanced produce concept, and to move toward marketization operation, is the correct direction heading for success.Due to the limitation of the policy, system and culture, entirely adopting commercial innovation path is not feasible. Marketizaton, it is a battle of turning concept on producing Chinese documentary. Take correct attitude to marketization, for example the success of "Gu Gong", presenting us a comprehensive acknowledge on documentary attribute, as well as the obstacle of conflict between culture and commerce. We have confidence on Chinese documentary program, even though, it has long distance away from western documentary program.Practical experience has step forward, theoretical research is supposed to catch up. This thesis report covers all contents discussed above, it collects information from engage in producing documentary in Zero Channel Company and international documentary director conversion.
