From 1920s to 1930s , following the tides of modernism ,western culture swept Japan. The process that western culture and traditional Japanese Culture fought with each other and assimilated can be seen form the great changes of female images at that time. Women began to dress and have their hair done in western style, make themselves up and expose their body to express themselves by imitating western women. Moreover, they did sports to improve their health. Beyond that, more and more women worked in the society, forming a career women boom. In a word, women became active in various aspects .As the change of dressing and physical performance is symbolized by the offspring of modernism"modern girls", we can call it"modern girls"phenomenon. However, people only concerned about the appearance of"modern girls", and always defined them from the perspective of men and intellectuals. But we can find out that, in order to fight against the hegemony of men and the intellectuals, women asserted themselves by physical performance, such as dressing, hair-style, makeup, employment, sports and so on. They were no longer traditional women, who always obeyed their fathers or husbands, but newly born women. Therefore,"modern girls"phenomenon is significant in reconstructing gender.
