While we are going to research an art school, it is necessary to analyze its social background. As a result, this paper takes the artworks of the Hudson River School as a document of its era, and emphasizes the social context. If we took the works of the Hudson River School, we would find that its technique may be naive. However, their social significance is much more than artistic character. The paper emphasizes on the influence of the era and social context of the Hudson River School instead of its modality. The rise of the Hudson River School has a close connection with the American popular taste in the 19th century; and the middle class appreciated the moral factor and national spirit in their works. During the late period of the Hudson River School, the major style turned from noble to realism. Nevertheless, the evolution of middle class' taste should be an important factor to cause such change. Therefore, the paper tries to discuss the Hudson River School under the social economic background of America in the 19th century, the national character, the popular taste, the social class of the buyers etc..
