Modern Chinese Literature Servant Images Study

The existence of servants had lasted for more than one thousand years.During that period of history,the servants were just dwarfs as compared with their superior masters.It was until in 20^th century that the servants had the chance to come out of the shadow to make their appearance in literary works.Some even turned out to be prominent figures in literature.The images of servants play an importanf part in the study of the literary images.Research into the servant groups is an important branch of literary study.The current research about servant images mainly focuses on ideology;particular cases with weighty emphasis on their consciousness of servility and the moral feelings associated with it; strongly criticizing the servility ideology and rigid stratification.But on the whole,the previous research is want of comprehensive analysis of the phenomennon.Although a petty class,the servant groups played a great part in shaping history and their dog's life was reflection of it.The creative points about this article are as follows:to review the servant images in literature in a broad and comprehensive way;to explore the esthetic values intrinsic in the servant images and the cultural psychology in a detailed and systematic way by analyzing representative literary works.The richness in content and uniqueness about this article is unprecedented.The ariticle consists of Introduction and Four parts,to be followed.Introduction A brief treatment is given to the definition of servant alongwith current situation of the research about it.Part one the role the servant images played.The author expounds the significance of servant images in the context of conflicts between old and new culture;the transforming of national characteristics and the class struggle.Part two the analyzing of their characters,such as hardworking,loyalty,dumbness,cowardice,greediness and so on.Part three the esthetic values intrinsic in servant images which are to be discussed in three aspects:the tragedyfor the disadvantaged group;misery literature;salvantion themes.Part four discussing the causes for the inevitable existence of servants,from the perspectives of social system,cultural ideology and survival strategy.Conclusions:the transformation of servant images from being invisible to visible.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China,the word servant has found its way back into the history museum.But the true liberalization of servants only came after they got out of their odd life cycle and to realize their potential values,not just in name.
