The word"composition", a term derived from fine arts, refers to the technique element that coordinates and integrates the picture in painting art. Dancing composition is one of the indispensable technique elements in dance creation. Its concept is derived from fine arts but different from that of fine arts; compared with fine arts, the dancing composition not only is a category expressing space but also possesses the property of time. Therefore, from the perspective of expression form, dancing composition mainly refers to"dynamic pictures in the space of stage".This thesis researches on the dancing composition mainly starting with the whole visual effect of the stage, and takes the"figure-ground"concept in the"visual psychology study on the consciousness of dance creation"by critics as its theoretical point d'appui (the stage as"ground"and the dancers as"figure", and dancers as"ground"and"figure"for each other) to analyze and generalize the expression forms at various levels of dancing composition. On this basis, the thesis discusses the application methods of the dancing composition techniques at the two levels, makes clear the forms and methods of dancing composition and summarizes the core application values of dancing composition in dance creation. The thesis consists of four chapters:Chapter I: Section I introduces the concept of"dancing composition", and, based on the whole vision of the stage, concern the dynamic pictures composed by both the stage and dancers; analyzes the aesthetical features, philosophical ideas and era characteristics expressed by dancing composition, and then digs out the cultural connotation of compositional techniques; finds out the common ground between dancing composition and music and fine arts, and explains the link between dancing composition and other art. Section II generalizes and summarizes various research perspectives of well-known eastern and western dancers on compositional techniques as the theoretical and practical basis of this thesis, and forms the multiple-level thinking on dancing composition with"figure-ground"concept as the starting point. Chapter II: Section I analyzes the expression form at the first level of dancing composition—composition composed by the stage and dancers; including the composition composed by the"figure"dancers and the three-level"ground"of stage space, scenery and stage property, and their relation. Section I analyzes the expression form at the second level of dancing composition—composition composed by dancers from the following two perspectives: different forms composed by dancers; time and space.Chapter III: Section I explores the core application values of compositional techniques and Referring to analyses on Chinese and foreign classical dance works, this chapter generalizes the core application values of compositional techniques from two aspects—"expression of circumstances"and"narrative of plot". Section II forms the"space application methods"of compositional technique, based on the"figure-ground"relation at the first level.
