Gabriel Urbain Fauré(1845-1924)was a French composer, teacher, pianist and organist. He is a representative composer in the history of Western music. As a composer who was at the forefront of the French turn-of-the-century era,his melodies and harmonies had his own distinctive personal style, which had considerable influence on many composers of the early 20 th century, and on the teaching of harmony for future generations. His art song compositions are the most prominent and continued throughout Fauré's life.Over the course of his career,he published more than a hundred art songs.Victor Hugo(1802-1885)was a French Romantic writer and politician of the early 19 th century. His works are well known in all literary genres. This thesis is a study of three art songs composed by Fauré based on Hugo's poetry. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is about the composer, the writer's life and composition and the socio-historical context in which he lived and composed. The second chapter presents an ontological analysis of the three art songs,"Le papillon et la fleur" "Mai" and "L'absent" composed using Hugo's poems in Fauré's early works, including structure, lyrics, and harmony. The third chapter is about the singing characteristics and artistic treatment. As a student of vocal performance,I hope that the study of this topic will provide some reference for many vocal learners and thus better increase their understanding of Fauré's art songs.
