| "Suzhou Pingtan", a general term for the monologue story-tellinig in Suzhou dialect to the accompaniment of stringed instruments, enjoying its popularity in southern Jiangsu Province, northern Zhejiang Province and Shanghai area, is a Chinese folk art form full of southern characteristics. Welcomed by common people, it is also considered as the gem of Suzhou's fine traditional culture. It is sung in Suzhou dialect, integrating speech, loud laughter, playing and singing in one. For centuries, based on its profound accumulation of art experience, close contact with the masses, as well as mutual influence with other art categories, Suzhou Pingtan has become an influential art form, with its viarious famous schools for an enduring taste.With the social development and progress of civilization, coupled with the development of electronic media innovation, people are gradually met with diversified entertainment, and their aesthetic feeling and aesthetic habits have changed. Pingtan, like other national arts, such as opera and folk art, is faced with new challenges, striving for survival between the market and the art. Based on the achievement of previous research, taking five historical periods of Suzhou Pingtan's development as a framework, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the development of Suzhou Pingtan in terms of the musical genres, singing characteristics etc., and the reasons for its rise and fall. Finally, with the five basic elements of Mass Communication as the starting point, this papa-discusses the future development of Suzhou Pingtan and puts forward new proposals for its heritage in the new period. |
