Vocabulary recognition, which plays a very important role in reading, is one of the basic sections of the process of reading. During the course of vocabulary recognition, the issue of the function of shape and voice in vocabulary recognition is always a concerned subject in cognitive psychology area. How people access the meaning from the sense of sight, various studies support the theory of their different viewpoints, and there have been continuous disagreements and disputes, so how the orthography and phonology influence vocabulary recognition and what role of the two factors play in vocabulary recognition are still the hot spots of current research. This study discussed the orthography and phonology activative effect in vocabulary recognition, so as to explore further in the arguments.Combined with lexical decision task and semantic-related task, this study carried out two experiments respectly using the traditional methods of behavior experiment and the modern methods of eye movement experiment, and made a comprehensive analysis of the results of the two experiments. The first part of the experiment mainly concerned the influence of the orthography and phonology in vocabulary recognition under the condition of one word being activated, while the second part of the experiment mainly studied the influence under the condition of two words being activated, and more detailedly analyzed the respective role of the two factors in the course of vocabulary processing.This paper comes to the following conclusions: (1) the effect of orthography and phonology: the orthographic activation has the most significant effect on vocabulary recognition under the condition of one character being activated, while the accurate phonetic activation and the inaccurate phonetic activation also have the significant effect; but under the condition of two characters being activated, there exists the effect of accurate phonetic activation and the inaccurate phonetic activation, but with no significant effect of orthographic activation; (2)the effect of vocabulary using degrees: the using degrees of the mediating character has made the significant effect ,but the effect is not same under the different experiment conditions. When it is under the condition of one character being changed, any of the above three activation has a significant effect on vocabulary recognition, and the impact ways are quite similar; but under the condition of two characters being changed, only the way of accurate phonetic activation and the inaccurate phonetic activation have the effects, moreover, with different effects. The using degrees has certain effect on the innactivated contrasting vocabulary group to some extent, which shows that the vocabulary processing gets faster when the objective word is more frequently used. (3)the difference of vocabulary processing course: accurate phonetic activation and the innacurated phonetic activation only has effect during the later period of the vocabulary processing. When there is not any activation, the effect of using degrees only exists in the early stage of the vocabulary processing.
