While LU Xun's works have enlightened us from "feudalism" and thus become the classic works of modern Chinese literature, JIA Ping-wa's works are showing concern and suspicion over the "current" issues. Moreover he has constituted the relation of "dialogue"with Lu Xun's literature tradition through his work. In the respects of the depiction of low-rank civilians as well as the enlightening narration in both books of Happiness and The True Story of Ah Q, the thesis which based on the parallel comparison method, does present an observation for and a comparison between the two books, in which the similarities and differences are well illustrated by analyzing the characters' obscuration and enlightenment, humbleness and self-relief, self-reflection and self-transformation, and so forth.Firstly, LU's works aimed at making the public note the significance of curing people's psycho-illness, whereas JIA's works intended to arouse the societ's concern for the living conditions and contradictory confusion of the peasant-workers. Both of their works have embodied the authors' specific literary concept of Realism—"Art for Life". Different eras have given LU and JIA different missions. Remarkably, either mass enlightenment or self-enlightenment means to call for that an individual matures his/her ideology out of rationality to be sensible enough to get rid of the self-restraining state. From the initial "May 4th Movement" to the current so-called "New Enlightenment Campaign", along a long and hard road has enlightenment been experiencing new developments in China.Besides, the two works forecited share one mental connotation, namely "Spiritual Victory", a philosophic principle exceptionally elucidated in this thesis. Through comparative analysis for such principle of the two works, the thesis has presented its distinctive study about the following questions. Is it simply a mental state or a solution, occasional or essential, to face the reality positively or to escape from the reality, to be confronted with an individual life or collective lives? Can it still be granted any surviving possibility by the orientation of the present social values? In view of the above questions, when reading and comparing the two works, we are supposed to meditate over more source-related questions as followed apart from the continuation and extension of the principle. Why does it still exist? What on earth has sparked the peasants' material desires sky-rocketing associated with, however, a mental vacancy? What has resulted in the peasants' turning out to be of the lowest rank in the city? How has the depiction of low-rank civilians proved to be a literary phenomenon and even a subject for research? The thesis has analyzed and elaborated all this.At last, the thesis analyzes self-reflection and transformation from the angle of the thought and the artistic characteristic. As an elite witer designated as the "Soul of the Nation", unavoidably, LU often underwent self-reflection and self-examination out of his self-conscious social and national responsibility. In order to learn the collective psychology of the people, LU had to learn their ill-state of psychology and then show his major concern on how to utilize literature and art to transform their collective psychology, which trapped him into a dilemma. The thesis deals with some more relevant issues of the research over collective psychology of the people, such as innovativeness, new problems and prospects in such research nowadays. When studying Jia's self-reflection upon the modern urbanization, the thesis starts from problems arising from different aspects in the modern city, and then analyzes the characters in the novel. The thesis attempts to reveal the transformation of modern peasants' personality from the countryside-born writer's complicated attitude towards peasants. The thesis also identifies how to well lead the healthy development of individual ideology in the present age when surviving desire stands out. In the end the thesis delivers a comparative research between the two literary works from the light of transformation of literature and art. From the elaboration of the thesis, it can be concluded that both works turn out to be concerned with enlightenment and the mental world of the weak, as well as the study over the collective psychology of the people. So-called "true story" of originality as both the works are, the two works differ in narration and description, background and connotation, details and omissions.
