Reception theory doubts the pre-determined meaning of a given text, but put reader's reception of it on a central position, thus elevating readers, who have been neglected by literary study before, to a dominant position. For it regards literary works as a uncompleted and multi-layered structure abundant in uncertain spots and vacancies. It believes the meaning of the work is defined by readers'particular understating and imaginative interpretation of the work, to which literary study should attach great importance. Applied in translation, this theory puts translators'initiative and creativity in the first place, then emancipates them from the position of the "servant" of a literary work and makes them equal creators as those original writers. The Reception Aesthetics ushers a new access to translation. It is a new dimension in which we can view the reception and recreation of textual translation from a complete different perspective.In translating Tang and Song poetry, Pro Xu tries to transplant the beauty of the poems into another culture by means of identifying, generalizing or concretizing to achieve the resemblance and truthful representation of the poems in addition to the verbal translation of the original images. Xu's translation not only gets "similarities" to the original form, meaning and style, but demonstrates the beauties in connotation, sound and form, which enables readers to comprehend, appreciate and admire the rendered editions. He knows well how to use translator's initiative and creativity thoroughly, and intends to take poetic translation as a mission so as to transform literary beauty of one nation into that of another even into a kind of universal beauty. Therefore, the study of Xu Yuanzhong's translation theory in the viewpoints of Reception Aesthetics will justify the feasibility and aesthetic values of his translating practice.
