Luo Pin, And His Poetry

Luo Pin is the famous painter in the middle of Qing Dynasty and the last of Eight Great Painters in Yangzhou of Qing Dynasty. The painting of Joyous Ghosts he painted made a noise in the world of that age, which is well known to all. However, we usually value his paintings too much so that we ignore the fact that he is a good poet as well. This paper attempts to select Luo Pin's literary activities as the research object and his poetry creation as the main body of research, to analyze Luo Pin's poetry style, poetry origin, etc. and their combination with his life experience under a comprehensive and in-depth discussion, so as to reveal the poetry talent of the noted painter. The paper consists of four parts.The first part introduces Luo Pin's life and thoughts. He was born poor without any official position in all his lifetime. Although eager for the peaceful life, he had to run about for a living all year around. He had ever visited the capital of Qing Dynasty three times and felt all the living worries. He liked making friends and at the age of 24 he came under the tutorship of Jin Nong in Qiantang City, who expertise in poetry and painting. From then on, he was absorbed in the study and won a place in the circle of poetry and painting.The second part lists Luo Pin's poetry subjects. In spite of a small number, Luo Pin's poetry contents involve a lot, such as Chanting, Pastorale, Admiration of Hermit Life, Memory of Sb., Praise of Sth., Scenic Description, Mourning, Nostalgia, etc. They can be divided into four categories generally, respectively Friendship poem, Praise poem, Leisure poem and Memorial poem. Those works faithfully reproduce the Luo Pin's life experience, express his thoughts and feelings and reflect his lofty pursuit of value and personality.The third part illustrates Luo Pin's characteristics of poetry. Luo Pin's poetic concept was not recorded, but his creation generally presented the art pursuit to follow his master Jin Nong, that is, not following the crowd, not joining any art school and adhering to his own personality. His poetry thus showed the artistic style of cordial, easygoing and even "picture in poem". In terms of the artistic skills, he also avoided the prevalent custom, sought the new way, and offered a unique novelty aesthetic enjoyment to people.The fourth part briefly discusses the origin of Luo Pin's poetry. Based on the learning and inheritance to the previous generation of poets, Lu Pin's poetry mainly showed the tendency to follow Tao Yuanming and Jin Nong.This paper covers the contents of history, literature and painting, etc. Because the related literatures are exiguous, this paper, mainly based on the interpretation of the classics, deeply analyzes the Lu Pin's poetry with a multidimensional perspective in order to draw an objective and accurate conclusion.
