Taking the words in the dictionaries of Xinhua Dictionary of New Words,New Words in Code:2003-2005 and popular new words and phrases as the research object, the dissertation analyzes the phenomena of using figures of speech in rhetoric word-making on the basis of strong quantitative analysis of the new words. According the rhetoric methods the new words adopted when they are created, the dissertation classifies the types of the rhetoric word-formation, and gives a full description. Furthermore, the dissertation discusses the cognitive mechanism of rhetoric word-formation based on the relevant theories about Cognitive Linguistics. And also, the dissertation makes an attempt to apply the research results to the practice of teaching Chinese as a second language. So, the research on rhetoric word-formation not only has great significance to vocabulary research, but also has important value in vocabulary teaching.In the research of rhetoric word-formation, the dissertation tries hard to get out of the old patterns of experience and perception, not only describing the complete picture of the rhetoric word-formation, but also studying the deep cognitive mechanisms behind the rhetoric word-formation of new words, in order to make the conclusions of the study objective, scientific and practical.The dissertation consists of six parts:Chapter 1, introduction, includes the study aims,methods,significance; the problems should be solved; the definition of the new words; literature review. Chapter 2, makes the statistical analysis of rhetoric word-formation. Chapter 3, studies the types of the rhetoric word-formation. Chapter 4, makes cognitive analysis of the rhetoric word-formation. Chapter 5, the research achievements gives significant guidance toward the teaching of Chinese as a second language. Chapter 6, conclusions, summarizes the results of this research and pointing out there still exists some problems to be improved.
