For a long time the academic circles has not paid enough attention towards research in Chinese vocabulary, much less the updating of research methodology. From the opening and reformation of China, the research in vocabulary has been renewed in many aspects such as in research methodology and viewpoint. Since the 1990s, the papers and works on the vocabulary have gradually risen, and the research achievements are also quite outstanding. Although the situation is like this, there is an important area which no one has made thorough and systematic research to this day. that is the area of rhetoric word-formation. Rhetoric word-formation is to some extent the organization of the morpheme to create new words, which reflect the thinking habits, the value concepts and the speaking patterns of the Han people. The words which are generated by rhetoric seem to have more arguments and source meaning of lexicon than the words which are generated by other methods. So , the research in rhetoric word-formation not only has significant towards vocabulary research and vocabulary in education, but also has due referring value towards the teaching of Chinese as a second language.This dissertation takes the words in the 2002 Enlarged Edition of The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary as the language data bank, analyses the lexical entries included in this dictionary one by one and classifies them as figurative words, metonymy words, hyperbole words, caique words, euphemism words, contrast words, respect and depreciatory expression according to the rhetoric methods they adopted when they are created, the author tries to reveal some basis of creation of their generation through the analysis of these rhetoric words.The dissertation includes five parts: Part one, the preface illustrates that it isnecessary to study the creation of words from the aspect of rhetoric based on the realities that new words appear constantly , and explains the reason why the author selected the 2002 Enlarged Edition of The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary as language data. Part two, chapter 1 clarifies the necessity of rhetoric words study from three aspects; Part three, chapter 2 analyses the various types of rhetoric word-formation in detail; Part four, chapter 3 puts forward some opinions towards the explanations given in The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary; And the last part, chapter 4 discusses the achievements in research giving significant guidance toward the teaching Chinese as second language, and presents some opinions to the stylistic rules and layout of definition in the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary.
