The continuing modernization and industrialization of China has brought an increasing number of migrant workers from rural areas into the cities. More and more attention is being given by the government and other social organizations to the issues and problems related to this particular social group. One of these problems is the lack of"spare-time cultural life". This author has conducted one year of field research with the Shanghai Migrant Workers'Troupe, a nongovernmental full-time performance group created and organized by migrant workers themselves. Throughout the period of research, field reports have recorded the growth and development of the troupe, as well as the daily operating model. This paper starts by understanding the research subject from the perspectives of social performance studies and people's theatre, then, through an analysis of the societal value and significance of this performance group, seeks to uncover and dissect the outstanding problems that exist in its current operating model. This paper concludes by proposing a more sustainable model for the continuous development of migrant worker art troupes in China, as well as putting forth an appeal to the government and other social organizations to work together to improve the spare-time cultural life of migrant workers and to ensure their rights to access and enjoy artistic and cultural activities.
