The Landscape paintings which take the Tibetan Plateau as the subject matter is a new kind of artistic subject. Since the 20th century, the landscape paintings taking Tibetan plateau as the subject matters have come into being and gradually flourished. The Tibetan Plateau is known for its unique natural geographic environment, regional and ethnic characteristics. In the Tibetan Plateau, people can see colorful prayer flags fluttered in the breeze, piles of Mani rubbles and pious disciples of Tibetan Buddhism lying prostrate ever after they making a step forward, they can hear the low and deep sound of Buddhist spell. All those things have bestowed the Tibetan Plateau with a kind of mysterious atmosphere. People in the Tibetan Plateau show more veneration and awe than in any other places. The mountains and lakes here are just consecrated as goddess and sacred lakes. The natural atmosphere of the Tibetan Plateau is original without being refined by any forms of arts. Only when we are personally on the scene can we truly appreciate the magnificence and profundity of it.Because of the special geographic location and inconvenience of transportation, the Tibetan Plateau is scarcely presented in the ancient paintings. This is the very reason for which few people can really know this wonderful land.1:From the beginning of 20th centaury during the War of Resistance against Japan, some artists started to come to the Tibetan Plateau and take it as the theme of their creation. They just took the local conditions and customs as the source to comprehend life and arts in a deep way. Meanwhile, their paintings served as an implication to stir up the patriotism of the whole nation and were in accordance with the interests of all the Chinese people to win the war of Resistance against Japan. The representative artists are Zhang Daqian, Ye Qianyu, Wu Zuoren, Guan Shanyue and Zhao Wangyun. However, most of them merely conducted their artist creation individually and no artist would take the Tibetan Plateau itself totally as the theme of arts.2: In the middle of the 20th Centaury, after the foundation of People's Republic of China (P.R.C), since the year of 1960 some artists such as Pan Shixun, Dong Xiwen and Wu Guanzhong have been organized and sent by the government to the Tibetan Plateau, which provides the artists with a broad foundation to know profoundly about the Tibetan Plateau. Meanwhile during this period, the artists working in Tibetan Plateau for long-term have appeared, such as Zhu Naizheng and Han Shuli.3: With the improvement of transportation condition, stability of our society and the uniqueness of the local conditions and customs in the Tibetan Plateau, a great many artists start to come to this place for its great reputation. Since then, the artists who specialized in the paintings of Tibetan Plateau have appeared, consequently, some new painting approaches and techniques have come into being. For instance, An artist named Liu Wannian has initiated painting techniques to present glaciers, dry-snow, volcanic rockeries, snow and mist, weathered stones, dried-up alkaline shoals, spongy sanded soil, vegetation, cogon grass, mudslide. Moreover, he also widely uses the painting techniques of structural watercolor accumulation, melting splash-ink, cross-sectional overlapping formation. Undoubtedly, all those forms of arts show the creativity and originality of the artists.Recently, the Tibetan Plateau related subjects and the Landscape paintings which take Tibetan Plateau as subject matters have gradually drawn people's attention. The Tibetan Plateau is an integral part of china, her existence fully shows us the uniqueness of china's regional geography. The largest scale of exhibition since the foundation of new china which took the Tibetan plateau as the background was held in 2009. The exhibition includes all the important artist works taking the Tibetan plateau as subject after the 20th century. Undoubtedly the holding of this exhibition has great value of reference to today's artistic creation and the history study of arts. Therefore, it is necessary for the artists to return to the nature and develop the painting techniques which are oriented to the new themes and ages through a comprehensive study.
