As one important means of expressing the mood in Dai Language, a large quantity of modal particles can be used at any part of sentences in Dai Language, expressing doubt or estimation. In the current study of Dai language, the author has not found any books or papers specializing in the modal particles of Dai language, therefore, the study of the modal particles on Dai-Ya Dialect can be affluent in the research of Dai language. The author puts into practice.the research method used in studying the modal particles of Chinese and Zhuang Languages, that is, to establish natural corpus of first-hand language data by ground field survey. This paper studies the sentence-final modal particles used in daily Dai-Ya Dialect in Shangsuopu Group, Manle Village, Mosha Town, Xinping County, Yuxi City of Yunnan Province, by describing and analyzing their meaning and usage.Synchronic description is the main research method consulted by this paper, and field survey, analysis and comparison are also employed as supplementary. This paper also discusses the formation and origin of the negative sentence-final modal particles in yes-no questions " li24,"le11","l(?)11", as well as does a preliminary comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between the sentence-final modal particles in interrogative sentences between Dai and Thai languages.This paper is divided into six chapters:Chapter one first outlines the status quo of the study on Dai language, and modal particles of Dai and Zhuang Languages, then puts forward the purpose and significance of this paper, the corpus sources, research methods and innovative points. Chapter Two describes the geographical environment and the status quo of Dai-Ya Dialect, and also summarizes in detail the Dai-Ya Dialect phonology in Xinping Mosha area.Chapter Three introduces the academic definition and classification of modal particles, and defines the sentence-final modal particle in this paper by considering the characteristics of Dai-Ya Dialect modal particles and the scope of the present study, describes and analyses with detail the meaning and usage of every sentence-final interrogative modal particle commonly used in definite question, yes-no question, and alternative question of Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect respectively. The characteristics of the sentence-final interrogative modal particle in Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect are generated as the following:1. In addition to the employment of a single modal particle, the combination of multiple modal particles is frequently used in Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect2. Interrogative sentence-final modal particles of Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect distinguish from each other by the changing the vowels and pitch.3. Some modal particles used in yes-no questions of Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect are exclusive to positive or negative interrogatives, however, some modal particles can be used in either type of interrogatives.4. Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect has a special set of negative modal particles li24, le11 and l(?)11.5. Sentence-final modal particles in both positive and negative interrogative sentences are usually employed in pairs. Chapter Four comparatively analyzes of the usage and meaning of negative modal particles and negative adverbs in Xinping Dai-Ya Dialect, other dialects of Dai Language, Zhuang Language, and Kra language, as well as concludes that L-series negative modal particles li24,le11 and l(?)11 very likely originate from the early negative adverbs of L-series, which may be related to the early rear-negative adverbs in Kam-Tai language.Chapter Five briefly compares the differences and similarities between the sentence-final modal particles of three Dai dialects-Xinping Dai, Dehong Dai, and Xishuangbanna Dai Dialects. Section Two of this chapter does a preliminary comparison of the sentence-final modal particles between Dai language and Thai language.Chapter Six summarizes the whole paper, and presents the inadequacies and the need for further research.
