During the Late 19th and early 20th century, Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan took history as a mirror and used it to save China. They actively advocated the history revolution. Under the background, "new history" developed. The two historians turned to the ethnic history research during the time of ideological trend. This means the progress and development of modern China's ethnic history, the agreement of national and political community which came from their research had great influence on the construction of modern China.This paper uses the history research methods and methods relating to the national history to make a deep analysis on the viewpoints of Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan about ethnic history. Basing on this, the paper discusses the orientation and meaning of Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan's nationalism. This paper includes five parts.The introduction part is mainly about the motivations of the research, the purpose and significance of Liang and Zhang's viewpoints about ethnic history. This part also reviews the relating academic achievements.The first part mainly discusses the Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan's directions of history research during the new history ideological trend. Firstly, the paper begins with the historical background of modern China's society and combines with the modern western history theory and the effects of nationalism to analyze the forming of ideological trend of new history. Secondly, the paper analyzes the relationships between the new history and the ethnic history. Thirdly, the paper discusses the orientation of Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan's nationalism.The second part discusses the main contents of Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan's ethnic history research, including their research on the origin of Chinese nationality and some other problems which they deeply researched on.The third part mainly analyzes the orientation of Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan's viewpoints of nationalism reflected by their research on ethnic history. They had no disagreement on goals of establishing modern China. But they did not come to an agreement on what kind of system the government should establish and what kind of national community should be used to establish a modern country. The different thoughts made their nationalism orientations develop in different ways. Their viewpoints of national and political community reflected in their research had some influence on the political development of modern China.The last part of this paper discusses the achievements and inadequate viewpoints of Liang Qichao and Zhang Taiyan's history research on nationalism.
