Sherwin Language And Culture Of The Place Names

It's the most important part of Chinese linguistics to research the toponym of those areas in which more than one nationalities are living together. The paper takes such a region, Xuanwei, as example. Han and Yi nationalities are living together here in Yunnan province. The paper analyses the features, the words structure and the evolving of toponyms here and the words and rhetoric used in the toponyms here. The paper is divided into following six parts:In introduction, we analyses relationship between the toponymy and linguistics, point out the definition and the categories of toponym research. Then we summary the Chinese toponym research status and trend. The brief introduction of research object is followed. Finally, we combined the points of linguistics and toponymy, give out the realistic and theoretical significance of our research.In the first chapter, we introduce the general situation of XuanWei's toponym and group XuanWei's toponyms into three types according the language. Then we summary the features of XuanWei's toponyms as mixed and multiple.In the second chapter, we sort out the words used in XuanWei's toponyms systematically and analyses their words structure from the point of words building and creation.The third chapter is focused on the rhetoric used in the XuanWei's toponyms from sound, meaning and figures of speech aspects.The toponym evolving reason and mode builds up the fourth chapter. The reasons are summed as nationalities, families, ecosystems and economy developing.The last part of the paper gives out four possible directions of further researching.
