| Progressive Party of Cyprus Working People is referred to as Communist Party of Cyprus. It also is called AKEL for short. Marxism-Leninism is the principle of the party and Socialism is its goal. The party adheres to the purposes for the benefit of working people of Cyprus. After Soviet Union and Eastern Europe upheaval, AKEL alleged at the party's Seventeenth Congress in October 1990:we stick to the principle of Marxism-Leninism, we stick to the socialism direction, we adhere to the purposes for the benefit of working people. Under the guidance of the communist ideology, AKEL made successes one after another. AKEL has become the second largest party of Cyprus in 1996. AKEL has become the largest party of Cyprus in 2001. AKEL general secretary, Dimitris Christofias, has become the President of Cyprus in 2008. When international communist movement is at a low, AKEL has been progress in the exploration. From the domestic impact, the party's development and growth to bring a chance of survival for the reunification of Cyprus;from the international impact, the party's experience in the course of development and lessons have important affected to the development of other countries'Communist Party and the world communist movements. Therefore, studying of the party's history and the success factors has great practical significance.This paper is divided into four parts on researching of AKEL. The first part and second part focuses on the development of the party's history;The first section describes the development process of the party before 1960s, the second section describes the development process of the party after the 1960s; the third part describes the successful factors of the party; the fourth part has a new understanding to the party on the basis of contacting history and reality, and further study the party on the issue of reunification of Cyprus.The first chapter elaborates the party's history before 1960s. The Communist Party of Cyprus was born at August 15,1926. Then it continued to grow and develop. The newly formed AKEL in 1941 has merged Communist Party of Cyprus (most scholars said the Communist Party changed its name to Progressive Party of the Working People), ending the situation of coexistence of two Communist Parties. AKEL developed it's military power in World War II by assisting the British military. The party's capability of combating quickly improved. AKEL constantly adjusted the party's policies based on complex domestic and international situation after World War II, especially in the "enosis" issue, the party's strength was rapidly promoting. The party made great contribution to Cyprus on the eve of independence of Cyprus.The second chapter is studying the party's history from 1960s to now. In this phase The party mainly through legal channels to part in the parliamentary politics. After independence to the 1970s of Cyprus, the party struggled to increase the number of the Party, and strengthen the party's influence in various elections. From the 1970s to the 1990s the strength of the party is into stably development. Since the 1990s, the party has stand by the test of history, and wrote a new chapter of the new develop history of party.The third chapter is studying factors of the party's success. First, the party is adhering to the socialism premise;second, the party is maintained to the relationship of the party and people;third, the party is to strengthen party's building; fourth, the party's flexible tactics of struggle.The last chapter is the conclusion, some reflection of the party. By the way of focusing on the combination of history and reality and using history methods, the chapter mainly analysis the party's spirit and the party's role of the Cyprus reunification. Under the premise of adhering to Marxism-Leninism, the party became more flexible and pragmatic. Having new thought of the development on the party in process of reunification, while promote the development of a unified solution to promote of Cyprus by the development of AKEL. |
