Crimean Crisis Study

The Crimea conflict has been in the spotlight for one year. When the Media and scholars probed into the conflict, factors related to geopolitics and big power politics were the first to be considered. This article was aimed to analyze the situation in Ukraine and Crimea through the perspective of cross-border ethnic groups issue, and to find out the relations between cross-border ethnic groups issue and big power games.At the same time, China is a big country with a lot of cross-border ethnic groups. This article was intended to take some experience from the Crimea conflict, to tackle the cross-border ethnic groups issue in China and to form better relations between cross-border ethnic groups factors and big power games.The first chapter mainly stated the basic conception of cross-border ethnic groups, history of Crimea and the progress of 2014 Crimea conflict, briefly explained the cross-border ethnic groups factors in the conflict.The second chapter descibed the current situation of US-Russia relations and how the two big powers competed using cross-border ethnic groups factors. After the ending of Cold War, US-Russia relations experienced a honeymoon period, but then wobbled. After the announcement of missile defense plans in eastern Europe, relations between the big power dropped to freezing point. Despite the collaboration between the two counties on the issue of denuclearization, the Ukraine and Crimea conflict pushed US-Russia relations to another tense situation. During this round of gambling, both two countries took advantage of the lacking of identity building in Ukraine and Crimea. US government backed the opposition to overturn the former Ukraine government, while Russian government supported the result of referendum and admit Crimea into Russia.The third chapter was aimed to take Crimea conflict as example, trying to find ways to tackle cross-border ethnic groups issues in China and form better connections between cross-border ethnic groups factors and big powers gambling. This article stated that there are some forms of cross-border ethnic groups problems in China, including ethnic separatist movement, cross-border drug trafficking and terrorism activities. Both internal and external factors contributed to these problems. In order to settle these problems, it is necessary to find ways from both inside and outside, avoiding the negative influence of cross-border ethnic groups issues and save cross-border ethnic groups from becoming tool or even victim of big powers’gambling.
