Collectivism is the value which deals with the relationship between collective and individual. It is the predominant value in the socialist society. Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought is an important component of socialist collectivism thought. It is the source of theory which insists on and develop collectivism under the condition of the socialist market economy The thesis mainly falls into five parts to explain and expound Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought.The first part, mainly explains the meanings of the collective and the collectivism, and expounds the historical development of collectivism, mainly including primitive collectivism, patriarchal collectivism and socialist collectivism three types.The second part, mainly expounds the theoretical origin of Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought. Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought is gradually developed on the base of inheriting the collectivism thoughts of Marxism classical writers and Chinese traditional culture, combining with Chinese concrete practice and practices of Chinese revolution and construction. Marxism classical writers’ collectivism thoughts mainly includes Marx’s, Engels’, Lenin’s and Stalin’s collectivism thoughts. The collectivism thoughts of Chinese traditional culture is mainly reflected in two aspects:emphasis on the overall interests and paying attention to the people-based.The third part, expounds the developing course of Mao Zedong’s collectivism from the time dimension. It is mainly divided into two historic periods:the New Democratic Revolution period and the period after the founding of new China. In the New Democratic Revolution period, the formation and development of Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought mainly experienced five periods:the period before and after the founding of Chinese Communist Party, the Great Revolution period, the period of the Agrarian Revolution War, the period of the War of Resistance against Japan and the period of Liberation War. In the period after the founding of new China, Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought experienced three periods:the socialist transition period, the period of entire construction of socialism and the "Great Cultural Revolution "period.The fourth part, expounds the main contents and characteristics.The main contents are:the essence of collectivism is serving the people; properly handle the benefit relationship between the country, collective and individual; adhere to the collectivism, oppose all forms of individualism; adhere to the Party’s mass line and collective leadership; set up advanced and typical moral models. Characteristics are:affinity to the people, class nature, practicalness and stage characteristic.The fifth part, starting from the reality, expounds the contemporary significance of Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought. Under the background of socialist market economy, we must insist on and develop collectivism, learn the correct theory of Mao Zedong’s collectivism thought, sum up experience, and constantly enrich the content of the collectivism. First of all, we should adhere to and develop collectivism, starting from the basic national conditions of our country. Secondly, correctly handle the dialectical unification relationship between individual interests and collective interests.Thirdly, correctly handle the dialectical unification relationship between material incentive and spiritual incentive. Fourthly, strengthen the construction of collective institutionalization.
