The business of China's overseas project contracting began late 1970s on the basis of overseas economic aided projects. It has been much developed in the past 20 years. With its further development, the concerned enterprises have trained more managers, improved the structures and become more competent. China's overseas project contracting business has become one of the most important parts of foreign economic cooperation, and played a big role in both promoting the growth of foreign trade and economic cooperation, and hence helped the rapid growth of the national economy. In the meantime, however, Chinese contractors still have certain difficulties, such as short of funds, inadequate finance and insurance services, and lack of qualified personnel for overseas project contracting business. Besides, current Chinese construction design codes, building codes and standards and procedures for examining engineer qualifications are not quite in compliance with the international practices, and the ability to provide advanced equipment and high standard materials still has to be further enhanced.Having briefly elaborated the history of the business, the author has developed the thesis in five parts.Part One describes the three developmental stages of the business, and the great significance to the development of China's external cooperation and her economy.Part Two gives an account of the present situation of its development, and the difficulties it's facing.Part Three analyses the developmental tendency of the business.Part Four describes new opportunities and new challenges in the field of this business after China' accession to the WTO and the in-depth development of economic globalization.Part Five gives suggestions on promoting the development of the business in the future.
