After World Warâ…¡, the tourism has been playing a very important role in the international economy. It has developed more rapidly than the global economy and has become the industry that develops fastest. According to the forecasting of the World Tour Organization, the hot spot of the international tour is transferring to the East Asia and the Pacific Area, and China is becoming the largest tour destination and the fourth largest tourist resource country in the world. After developing for more than 20 years, Chinese tourism has the prospective of becoming a pillar industry of the national economy and is showing great potentials. At the beginning of this century, one of the targets of Chinese tourism is to become a powerful tourism country in the world rather than in the Asia and to develop tourism as a pillar industry in the national economy. In China, the West has great potentials to develop tourism, for there are many kinds of tourism resources spreading widely, some of which are very precious. Now, faced with the opportunity of the West Development and China's entering WTO, tourism is supposed to play a great pole in the leaping development of the West. However, because of various subjective and objective reasons, there exists big difference between the western tourism and those of the eastern area and foreign countries. Many experts and scholars are working hard to study the theories and the practices on how to develop the western tourism, which will promote the reasonable development and sustainable use of the tourism resources and the improvement of tourism management. But there is little work done on the development of the western tourism from the angle of combining industry spatial distribution and regional economics. And it is known that to a large extent, touring activity is displayed in the form of tourists' spatial movement and the development of tourism should depend on the tourism resources, combine with the tourist market andregard the development of tour products and organizations as the center, so it is of great significance to analyze the tourism from the angle of spatial structure. This thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, the author sets forth the fundamental principles of tourism distribution and the theory of the western tourism distribution, which is the theoretic foundation of the whole paper. At the beginning, the concepts of tour, tourism resources and tourism are studied and defined, on the basis of which the fundamental principles of tourism distribution is discussed in general terms. Taking the above and the related regional development theory as the theoretic foundation and combining the theory of tour spatial structure, the author approaches the subject of the western tourism division. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of the western tourism resources, the achievement of tourism development, the problems of spatial distribution and their causes. At first, the western tourism resources are analyzed. Tourism resource is one of the important location factors that influence tourism distribution. In the West, there are plenty of tourism resources, such as the minorities with various characteristics and the old, mysterious religions. Moreover, for more than 20 years, tourism has been developing rapidly, with its status in the national economy being enhanced and its scale being increasingly spread. There are, however, some problems such as "the East is more developed than the West", nonpropotional internal development and low-level regional cooperation. At the end of this chapter, it is pointed out that the fundamental causes are backward concepts, management systems, unsound distribution mechanism and the shortage of qualified personnel. The third chapter is focused on the study of the tourist market of the West. Tourism distribution should take the market as its guide, so it is necessary to study the needs of tourist market. The tourist market of the West is divided into overseas and domestic parts.
