Applied Research, Advanced Manufacturing Technology In The Defense Industry Production Management

The national defense science & technology industry is the strategic industry of China which will develop rapidly during the Tenth Five-years-plan. However, the operation management of the national defense industry, impacted by the planned economy and the traditional management mode, does not fit the needs of the weaponry production with advanced manufacturing technology under market economy condition. In this paper, problems in the production management of the national defense industry are put forward based on the analysis on the basic characteristics and the management state of the national industry, and the advanced manufacturing technology that includes the such six components of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) as management information system, technology information system, automatic manufacturing system, computer-aided quality assurance system, and communication network and system data management system is described. The composition and systematic integration of the Engineering and Research Center for Computer-integrated Manufacturing System (CIMS) in Tsinghua University is used as an example to expound the application of CIMS in China. The advanced manufacturing technology plays an important role in the advanced weaponry production and is one of the major technical supports of the national defense modernization. The challenges that constrain the use of advanced manufacturing technology in national defense industry are put forth through analysis and the approach, steps and process of its application are described in detail. In the last chapter of this paper, the integrated manufacturing unit in the integrated manufacturing capability construction of Institute of Machine Manufacturing and Process, CAEP, is described and analyzed.The integrated manufacturing unit that consists of management information subsystem, "3C" subsystem, manufacturing subsystem and network environment has been put into operation. It has obviously good effect on shortening manufacturing time of a product, control of the product quality and reduction of production cost. The achievement of this research will find its use in the integration of CAD, CAM and CAPP of various military industries and institutes in China, which will have promotion to the improvement in the management of the national defense science, technology and industry.
