The relations between socialism and capitalism are dialectical ones where there is unity of opposites. On the one hand, there is antagonism, belligerence and repellency between them. On the other hand, there is coexistence, osmosis, supplement and transformability. It is of importance to understand and deal with the relations between them properly as to understanding what socialism is and how to build socialism. During the Cold War, many proletarian parties did not deal with the relations between socialism and capitalism ail-roundly and properly. They often took a one-side approach to the issue. In other words, they overemphasized the aspect of antagonism, belligerence and repellency but neglected the aspect of coexistence, osmosis, supplement and transformability, which damaged the socialist revolution and building of the states and the socialist movement of the world. The relations between socialism and capitalism have been developing. With the change of the age, the relations have gotten new features. After the conclusion of the Cold War and the disintegration of two-pole configuration, the tension of the world is relaxed, so the relations between socialism and capitalism have changed radically. On the base of the historical facts, the issue is discussed in the thesis roughly. The thesis concludes three parts. In the first part, coexistence and cooperation between socialism and capitalism during the Post-Cold War is expounded. The Cold War which had lasted for nearly one half century made socialist and capitalistic states know that nothing but peaceful coexistence can offer a stable development environment to each party. On the base of defending their benefits, they have been enlarging and deepening exchange and cooperation. To make themselves more prosperous, the two parties have been absorbing and studying the civilization of the other party more audaciously. In the second part, the antagonism and conflict between socialism and capitalism is discussed. During the Post-Cold War, the antagonism and conflict between the two parties does not disappear, but it has four new features: 1) The balance of the two parties has changed from general equilibrium to great disparity; 2) The antagonism and conflict has been transferred from the political and military fields to the economic and technologic ones; 3) The focal point of dealing with the relations between the two social systems has been transferred from emphasizing group interests featuring that social system and ideology is regarded as a dividing line to emphasizing state interests; 4) Conflict has changed from simple and direct means to complicated and indirect ones. In the third part, the great emphasis is put on probing that we should how to treat with capitalism to create a new situation in building socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new century when hope and challenge coexist In this part, after the recent situation is analyzed, some basic principles we should adopt are put forward when we deal with the relations between China and capitalist states. Finally, it is suggested that as a great socialist power, China should attach importance to several issues when she deals with relations between capitalism and herself in the process of modernization.
