West China is the least developed area in the country, which produced only 14.6 percent of the total GDP with 65.8 percent of the land and 23.7 percent of the population of the country. the lagging behind of west China and the continually increasing Regional Economy Inequality are becoming main problems in the development of Chinese economy and society . At the same time ,the Dual-structured Economy and Society system of western area is a key obstacle to its future development. The slow-down in the whole economy urges Chinese government to pay more attention on western area. As a result ,a series of policies has being carried out to help western provinces out of the vicious circle of poverty . However, the Dual-structured economy and society system of these provinces prevents them from developing efficiently. To make full use of these preferential policies, local governments of western area must speed up the development of urbanization to break the old system and make it possible for factors to flow freely between urban and rural areas. The process and pattern of Urbanization differ from nation to nation according to specific background. Therefore west China has to choose a suitable strategy of urbanization according to its own background and level of economy development to have a healthy economy system. In the following paper, the author analyses the institutional background and natural condition and historical experience of western area's urbanization development. Then she tries to give a comprehensive measure of the urbanization level of the area by comparing several important indexes with those of eastern area, finding out the present problems and possible keys to the problems.
