It is already more than half a century since the first supermarket company was founded in the U.S.A. Since the last decade of the 20th century, this industry has been developed rapidly in China. A number of world famous companies such as Wal-Mart ,Carrefour come to open shops in China, and thus, the competition more and more fierce. As a member of the WTO, China, now, is facing a very big challenge in this industry. Today, China's supermarket industry is just at its primary stage. So most of domestic supermarket companies are small in scale ,lack of money and advanced management knowledge. There is a tremendous gap between Chinese supermarkets and those of world famous ones. It will be most valuable to make researches for the development of this industry in China by learning international experience. There are several different types of supermarket. The biggest one is called as hypermarket. A very popular one is called Warehouse club, the most suitable one for the Chinese customers today is superstore, which is a mixture of supermarket and department store. The Chinese market is enormous. Many foreign supermarket companies are trying very hard to expand their business in China. How would Chinese companies take counter measures to compete the foreign competitors? The author of this thesis suggests that an appropriate development strategy should be formulated. A long-term plan should be mapped, and the government should make right policies. Besides, the domestic supermarket companies should find themselves in the right position, i.e. either a hypermarket,a warehouse club or superstore. Other than that, those companies should form a good strategy for their brand names---a very attractive brand name to their customers. Once it is well established, it will surely make big profits for the company.Last but not the least, a sound HR policy is also of vital importance, as it will help the company gain a competitive advantage. In so doing, China's supermarket industry will surely have a prosperous future.
