There is always a common rule during the thriving and development of nearly all port cities in the world: port prospers city, and port flourishes together with city. Port could not only promote the economical development of the city it owed to, but also bring along the economical development of areas about and hinterlands. So, there lies tight relationship between a port and its locality. Hence it draws great consideration to deal with relationships between ports and cities, and ports and areas. Relationship between ports and cities is an expansion of relationship between ports and cities. With the severe competition among port cities and among ports made competition among ports no longer depending on their own infrastructure and facilities. So, only by depending on economical development of the city could the city improve its competitive power, for port transport couldn't be realized out of the city. Therefore, more study on the relationships between ports and areas is of great theoretical and realistic significance.Under the background of faster integrity of global economy and China's entrance into WTO, the Yangtze Delta is becoming one of the most energetic and prosperous economical areas in the Country and all over the world. In past year, the Yangtze Delta accomplished GDP of 1,698.1billion Yuan, accounting for 17.7% of the whole nation; fiscal income of 335billion Yuan, accounting for 20.4% of the whole nation; exports value of 73.94billion USD, accounting for 27.8% of the whole nation. And the important status of the Yangtze Delta is hence established. Those ports and port cities among the Yangtze Delta areas plays an inevitable role in the promotion of transverse union and deep development of territorial economy. So, it is more urgent to have a study on the functions of territorial economy of the Yangtze Delta, the reasonable assignment, and the orientation of the Yangtze Delta ports group. This dissertation theoretically probes into the relationships between ports and cities and areas of the Yangtze Delta. The first chapter expatiates the general situation of ports and territorial economy of the Yangtze Delta, including analyses of the Yangtze economical zone, economical structure and distribution of the Yangtze Delta. The second chapter systematically illustrates the theory on relationships between ports and cities of home and abroad, based on which theauthor analyzes the concrete situation of the Yangtze Delta areas, and scientifically figures out the contribution the Yangtze Delta ports made to territorial economy. The third chapter analyzes and summarizes opportunities and challenges during the coordination and development of the Yangtze Delta ports and its territory, hence points out those unreasonable phenomena as existing in the distribution of the ports group of the Yangtze Delta. The fourth chapter brings forth a model of Clustering Analysis to illustrate the ports group of the Yangtze Delta, from which the author draws conclusion about the correct orientation and assignment of ports in the ports group, hence further establishes Shanghai's status as an international shipping center. Last but not the least, the author gives an overall summary on the relationships between ports cities of the Yangtze Delta and territorial economy, then a suggestion on the Yangtze Delta's territorial development in the future.
