Personality cult means that the subject's self-consciousness is lost in essence, showing as specific deification and following personage blindly. To maintain the centralization of state power rule, exploiting class often control the people's thought and action by means of personality cult. Taking liberating the whole mankind as its sacred mission, proletariat revolution objects to and repels personality cult fundamentally. However, some movements of deifying specific leaders still appeared during the international communist movement. Stalin's personality cult rose in Soviet Union in 30-50's of the 20th century, which proved to be very destructive and dangerous to the whole Party and the whole country. This should have taught us a good lesson not to commit the same mistake. However, Mao Zedong's personality cult in China still rose, accompanying "the Culture Revolution" tragedy, consequently, causing the inestimable enormous loss to the construction of new China, which is really worth of reflecting and studying.Mao Zedong's personality cult" used in this text is some kind of political and social phenomenon, which specially means the personality cult to Mao Zedong taking place in China, namely, exaggerating extremely and even deifying the leading function of Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong's acceptance, acquiescence or even encouragement of others' deification to him caused the fact that the masses followed the leader blindly, and the leader himself made his own decisions without consulting with others, which made the construction of the Party and the country suffer a lot of loss.In order to find out the cause of the rising and development of Mao Zedong's personality cult, this thesis has firstly probed its historical origin and the process of its progress in detail and drawn the conclusion that during the period from the Rectification Movement to the year 1957, the phenomenon of Mao Zedong's personality cult sprouted, and was suppressed on the whole, which, however, shouldn't be neglected because there might be some possibility of the development of the personality cult to the individual. Since 1957, the phenomenon of personality cult to Mao Zedong has taken shape and grew day by day, reaching its peak during the Period of "the Culture Revolution". Within the two years after the ending of "the Culture Revolution", Mao Zedong' personality cult still existed to some degree, and was eliminated gradually with the progression of the reform and opening-up. It was our Party that led us to abolish the sacred ring of light hanging over Mao Zedong.The forming and development of the phenomenon of Mao Zedong's personality cult were caused by many kinds of factors which worked interactively. People's superstition and blindly-following to Mao Zedong's individual authority offered the psychological foundation for it; the administrative system under undue concentration was the basic reason of its forming and development; Mao Zedong's pride and being arbitrary during hislast years, together with his acceptance, acquiescence, and support of personality cult were the key factor to promote its forming and development; some specific careerists' adding fuel to the flames on purpose was the important reason to make it move towards fanatic. The long-time existence of the backward small-scale peasant economy made the people very difficult to form democratic consciousness, which gave the opportunity to the existence of the backward feudal remaining thoughts, thus, finally offered the fertile soil for growing of the personality cult.To study history is finally to serve reality. Although the phenomenon of Mao Zedong' personality cult has become history already, yet the similar conditions to those under which it rose and developed still remain among reality.
