As an ideology and social practical movement, nationalism is always one of most important factors affecting on the change of international pattern. Looking back upon the history development of international patterns in past 300 years, we can see that nationalism strongly affected on the reconstruction and change of the various international patterns. Undoubtedly, nationalism will still play a pivotal role in building the coming international pattern during the history period of change of international pattern at present. This thesis composes the following several parts:Preface summarizes the achievements in nationalism research including the definition of its concept, types, historical development and function as well as the background, reasons and forms of expression of the current surge of the nationalism. It also gives a summary to the relations between nationalism and regionalism, globalization, as well as its effect on international affairs and international pattern.Section I, a discussion about the concept of nationalism and international pattern. As an integration of ideology and social practical movement, nationalism consists of several levels: firstly, it is a psychological consciousness; Secondly, it is a state of ideology or theory; Thirdly, it is a political creed and an asocial practical movement. While the international pattern is a relatively stable strategic relationship and structural situation built among the world' s main strategic strengths during certain history period.Section II, a brief historical retrospection upon the nationalism and the evolution of international pattern. It is pointed out that from the late Westphalia pattern, Vienna pattern, Versailles - Washington pattern, Yalta pattern to the transition period pattern after the cold war, all these transitions between those various international patterns had been followed by nationalism all along. Nationalism has more or less, directly or indirectly affected the change of international patterns with different level and style.Section III, a theoretic analysis on the ways by which nationalism affects on international pattern. By a deep and detailed theoretic analysis, creative-ness opinions are presented here: first, nationalism functioning on the change of international pattern by destroying empire hegemony. Empires as the three traditional empire: the Ottoman, Austro - Hungary, tsarist Russia and the contemporary empires epitome, the former Soviet Union, were all collapsed in the surging tide of nationalism one after another. The disorganization greatly changed the balance of the international powers, and in consequence reconstructed international pattern. Second, nationalism functioning on the change of international pattern by negating and surpassing other ideologies, such as Middle Ages religion cosmopolitanism, feudal monarchical power, and the two main ideologies: capitalism and socialism. Third, nationalism altered international pattern by constructing and deconstructing countries. The constructing and deconstructing function led nation - states transformed between integration and disintegration, and therefore deeply affected on the alteration of international patterns. For example, the disorganization of three traditional empires , the integration of Italy and Germany, the disintegration of contemporary Soviet Union;Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, and integration of East and West Germany, etc. . Fourth, nationalism altered international pattern by war. War is the most swift and miserable way by which nationalism altered international patterns, and effects of nationalism could be found in the back of all the wars, small or large, in the late world history.Section IV, an evaluation of the nationalism s function on the evolution of international pattern. It is pointed out that the ultimate motive force of the change of international patterns stems from the development of productive force, especially the development of science and technology revolution.
