The author attempts to figure out direction for A. O. Smith (China) Water Heater Company by doing SWOT analysis from the point of view of strategic management, especially competitive strategy. The author concludes that as a wholly invested American company in China, A. O. Smith (China) Water Heater Company should adopt focused differentiation strategy. Besides emphasizing her advantage on complete product lines and high quality products, strong R&D capability and overall management, the company need to develop her core competencies as well as company culture focusing on team work, mutual respect and continuous improvement. By becoming a real learning group the company can stay in the fast lane.
