With the end of World War II and the disintegration of the colonial system, the newly independent developing countries engaged in establishing south-south regional economic integration organizations. However, a survey of the development of south-south regional economic integration organizations indicated that most of them were unsuccessful. After analyzing the reasons lead to the unsuccessful result, this thesis came to the conclusion that it should be ascribed to the irremediable defect, i.e. the lack of basis for economic cooperation, which is vital to the regional economic integration organizations.Recently, with the promotion of globalization and regional economic integration and the effort made by China and ASEAN, China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) was finally established. This thesis studied CAFTA in the way of analyzing the traditional south-south regional economic integration organizations, and brought forward the unique characters of CAFTA. CAFTA has not only solid basis for economic cooperation, but also great potential for future development, which is completely different from the previously established south-south regional economic integration organizations. At last, this thesis raised the inevitable problems CAFTA would face in the future development and put forward feasible solutions from the point view of China. It is indicated that the problems could be solved with the joint effort made by China and ASEAN.
